Work on the MDGs in Iran began in August 2002 with the establishment of a theme group chaired by UNDP, and composed of UN and Government officials. Briefing sessions were held, and the group began gathering data on indicators. The first MDGs Progress Report was produced in late 2004 and the second MDG Report in 2006. Strengthening of national statistical capacity continues to be a challenge for the country team. The establishment of a Government taskforce to coordinate the systematic monitoring of the goals will be vital to the achievement of the MDGs in Iran.
