Sari - In order to commemorate the Nelson Mandela International Day in 2017, UNIC Tehran and Hormod Sustainable Development Institute (HSDI)  along with Department of Environment, NGO activists from the Mazandaran Province, local government officials, game guards, journalists, young people and children cleaned Farahabad  (Edalat 1) Beach in Sari, capital of the province on 28 August 2017.

UNIC Director Maria Dotsenko told more than 100 participants that as in the past, the UN jointly with local communicates around the world marks Nelson Mandela International Day (18 July) and highlighted that everyone has the ability and the responsibility to change the world for the better, and Mandela Day calls on everyone to take action and inspire change.

Quoting UN Secretary General Antonio Gutteres, who had met Mandela several times, Dotsenko said: “One of the most important lessons we can learn from Nelson Mandela is that to make progress, we must look forward, however difficult that may be.” UN SG said: “I was struck by his wisdom, his compassion, and above all, his humility.”

She pointed out that Mandela devoted his life to the service of humanity — as a human rights lawyer, a prisoner of conscience, an international peacemaker and the first democratically elected president of a free South Africa.

Maria Dotsenko also said Nelson Mandela inspired the world, inspired all of us and quoted him: “It always seems impossible until its done”.  She also reminded that Mandela once said that a saint could be defined as a sinner who keeps on trying.

UNIC Director quoted him: “Although he suffered terrible atrocities, “Madiba” never sank to the level of his oppressors; instead, he rose to the moment in history. His courageous example gave hope to people in South Africa, across the continent and beyond.

During this voluntary effort, some 2.5 hectares of Caspian Sea beach were cleaned from pollutants.

In addition, “Cleaners of the Mazandaran Nature” NGO by collecting leads of plastic bottles and selling them to recycling factories, purchased a wheelchair and donated it to a needy disabled person.
