United Nations Information Centre in cooperation with Iranian Association of Women’s Studies (IAWS) held a workshop on “Finding UN Information and Documentation” with focus on women issues for some 25 participants at the UN building on 31 October 2017.

UNIC invited UNFPA Programme Specialist Dr. Monire Bassir to introduce UNFPA and brief the audience on gender issues. She spoke about UNFPA’s work, which aims at ensuring that every pregnancy is wanted, every birth is safe and every young person's potential is fulfilled. She also discussed with the participants the importance of universal access to reproductive health, and talked about UNFPA's work on women's empowerment and ending harmful practices against women.

The audience was diverse: a judge, two advocates, two medical doctors, the head of the Women’s Affair of the National Iranian Oil Company, a few students of Women’s Studies from different universities of Iran.

UNIC Reference Assistant Ms. Nazanin Ghaemmaghami elaborated on some basic facts about the UN and its main organs, including General Assembly and its resolutions as well as declarations and conventions on women with a focus on the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW); Security Council and its landmark resolution 1325 adopted in 2000 on Women, Peace and Security; Economic and Social Council and Commission of the Status of Women as one of its subsidiary bodies and the women judges of the International Court of Justice.

Then Ms. Nazanin Ghaemmaghami addressed the participants on UN Women, an UN organization dedicated to promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women. Participants learnt how to use Women in Politics Map. Women issues among other global issues and UN Secretary-General’s Campaign “UNiTE to End Violence against Women” webpages as well as Women and the Sustainable Development Goals were reviewed.

The UN Secretary-General António Guterres webpage and his plans to further promote gender equality, including plans to increase the number of women on senior management positions were discussed. Ms. Ghaemmaghami also spoke about Deputy Secretary-General Ms. Amina J. Mohammed and Chef de Cabinet Ms. Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti.

Persian copies of the UN Charter and Universal Declaration of Human Rights as well as the UN System Chart were distributed among participants.

At the end of the session the participants and Ms. Armaghan Mahmoudi from IAWS expressed their satisfaction with the workshop and hoped that the Association can have more training progrmmes with UNIC.
