TEHARN - On the occasion of the Interntional Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, UNIC in cooperation with Interntional Studies Journal (ISJ) organized a workshop on structure, drafting and adoption of UN resolutions with focus on the Question of Palestine at UN conference room on 28 November 2017.

The workshop began by ISJ Editor-in-Chief Dr. Mehdi Zakerian’s remarks. Then, UNIC Director Dr. Maria Dotsenko after reading the United Nations Secretary-General’s message on the Interntional Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, briefed the participants on which UN bodies issue resolutions, complexity of details on drafting UN resolutions and its background, negotiations before and after tabling as well as life history of text, structure of resolutions and words commonly used in drafting UN resolutions.

She also specified that while the resolutions are adopted by the UN organs, there are many declarations and conventions contained in General Assembly resolutions.  Many multilateral treaties are adopted by the General Assembly and subsequently opened for signature and ratification by the Member States before they enter into force. The General Assembly is the main deliberative body on matters relating to international law.

The workshop continued by Dr. Ismaeil Baghaee-Hamaneh from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ School of International Relations (SIR) and Dr. Mohamad Sharif from Faculty of Law & Political Science of Allameh Tabatabaee University who also spoke on art of drafting and negotiating of UN resolutions.

The workshop ended by remarks of Ambassador Bagher Assadi, former diplomat and member of the former UNSG Kofi Annan’s “Panel of Eminent Persons on Civil Society and UN Relationships”.

Some 37 university professors and postgraduate students from across Iran took part in the one-day workshop.
UN promotional materials in Persian language were distributed during the workshop.
