On March 12 the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) held an introduction workshop with the partnership of Moje-e Pishro Search and Rescue NGO in Tehran on " Urban Search and Rescue Systems based on INSARAG guidelines".

The one-day workshop brought together 35 representatives from Iran's leading Search and Rescue teams and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to get updated on improving ways to be engaged in the international humanitarian system. This workshop was led by UNOCHA in Iran and it was supported by a number of Search and Rescue local organizations from different provinces.

Workshop sessions explored emergency response models and methods and used illustrations from a few recent disasters to instruct the participants how to best respond. The workshop thought by the head of OCHA office in Iran introduced main INSARAG approaches such as The International Disaster Response Environment (Humanitarian Actors and Key players, Mandates), International USAR Operations (Coordination and Tools) and INSARAG USAR Classification/Reclassification System.

This one-day training involved discussing on several disaster cases and simulations ranging from Turkey and Indonesia to UK and participants learned how to response most effectively, how to device strategies in case of a disaster and how to avoid fast-speed inefficient assistance. The session ended with a discussion on future involvement of Iran in international deployments and encouragement of participation of Iranian experts in international relevant USAR training.  

Mr. Barmaki, the head of OCHA emphasized on the importance of disaster preparedness at the community level and the vitality of effective coordination between governmental and non-governmental institutions. The representatives of NGOs requested development of training courses for communities to connect Iranian urban search and rescue experts into the international USAR system.
