29 July 2019 - Cooperation of NGOs with the United Nations

Tehran – The United Nations Information Centre in cooperation with the of Office of Women and Family Affairs of the Provincial Government of Tehran Province and Naghsh-e Javid Institute with the participation some senior government officials and the Representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) held a workshop entitled “Finding UN information” for some 70 participants from women NGOs of different cities in Tehran province.

The workshop held on 29 July 2019 is among a set of workshops that were launched in summer 2014 absorbing enthusiasts from all around country.

Director General of the Office of Women and Family Affairs of the Provincial Government of Tehran Province Ms Thoraya Shareghi said that NGOs have taken a participatory approach and get help from people in making decisions due to their nature of performance in the fields of social harm, rehabilitation, environment, humanitarian affairs and so on. The role of NGOs should be elevated on the international level so that the utilization of this capacity on different areas could be followed up so they could be empowered.

Deputy Minister of Justice on Human Rights and International Affairs and National Secretary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, Dr Mahmoud Abbasi in his remarks elaborated on the third generation of human rights, civil society and NGOs are the main players. He said NGOs can help governments on easing social ills and disorders within societies. Referring to the most important roles of NGOs namely to enhance social participation as well as progress, he said in order to solve the current social problems, the Government with the cooperation of the private sector and civil society should act efficiently.

Director General of NGOs and Unions Bureau of Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization (CHHTO) Dr Jalal Tajik in his speech thanked UNIC and some other UN agencies stationed in Tehran for their cooperation with CHHTO and expressed hope that the cooperation be continued in line with informing and enhancing NGOs.

During her speech at the workshop, UNFPA Iran Representative, Dr Leila Joudane detailed goals, activities and achievements of UNFPA as the leading UN agency serving women in Iran. “How much do you know about UNFPA?” asked Dr. Joudane, starting her presentation and initiated an interactive deep discussion with the participants regarding UNFPA mission in collaboration with the government to ensure a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every young person’s potential is fulfilled.

She continued the session by mentioning the great achievements of Iran on sexual and reproductive health and women empowerment. “During the past 25 years, the maternal mortality rate has dropped by more than 70 percent, 99 percent of births are attended by professional health personnel and today, 97.9 % of girls aged 15-24 are literate.” She added and continued “this is wonderful! You, in Iran, achieved a lot” then she underlined the important works still remain as the unfinished business of UNFPA.

“While Iran is one of the successful countries on the reduction of maternal mortality, our work is not finished yet, we need to achieve zero preventable maternal deaths, while we gained a lot in education for women, we need to accelerate the efforts to achieve the true participation of women in economy” she also stressed the significance of paying attention to those women and girls affected on recent floods and the UNFPA efforts to support them in cooperation with the government. “We need to join hands and efforts of all -Government, NGOs and community- to finish our unfinished business and to leave no one behind.” She concluded.

UNIC Public Information Assistant Ms Nazanin Ghaemmaghami elaborated on basic facts about the UN. She briefed the participants on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with a focus on goals 5 and 10.  The participants also navigated the UN website on UN and civil societyassociation with DGC and how to obtain ECOSOC consultative status, Gender equality,  Commission on the Status of Women, UN women, International Days on Women and World Day against Trafficking in Persons 30 July.

Persian copies of the UN Charter, Universal Declaration of Human Rights as well as the UN System Chart were distributed among participants.
