The UN Information Centre (UNIC) in Tehran, in collaboration with the Law Students’ Association of the University of Tehran (TULSA), held a workshop on “Finding UN Information and Documentation on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a focus on Goal 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) for some 20 graduate and undergraduate law students at the University of Tehran, Faculty of Law and Political Science on 13 March 2019.
UNIC Public Information Assistant Ms. Nazanin Ghaemmaghami addressed the participants on how to retrieve UN documentation and information on SDGs from UNIC and UN websites. She explained about the history and significance of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the international progressive efforts prior to the SDGs. She focused on achievements of these goals, their indicators and targets. She also talked about the Academic Impact initiative on the UN website, and introduced briefly De Montfort University which has been selected as the global hub for SDG 16.
Then the Professor of University of Tehran Dr Mehdi Piri, elaborated on the concept of sustainable development. He explained that the international community has tended to take a transparent and responsive approach towards participation of all States in attainment of SDGs. He clarified the different targets of Goal 16, and emphasized that all of them should be considered as a whole.
At the concluding of the training session, the representative of TULSA, Mr. Mohammad Saberinejad, noted the importance of a series of workshops on SDGs, in particular, Goal 16. During the session a number of videos on SDGs, retrieved by UNIC interns, were displayed, including the presentation of Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications Ms. Alison Smale, on “the role of universities in promoting SDG 16”. Persian copies of Millennium Declaration, the SDGs poster as well as some English copies of the Sustainable Development Goals Report 2018 were distributed among the participants.
