This year in Tehran, the day was officially celebrated in Ministry of Health with the presence of Minister of Health and other Iranian Government Officials, representatives from International Organizations including the United Nations, Academia, HIV/AIDS activists, artists, people living with HIV/AIDS, the media and private sectors and NGOs.
The ceremony officially entered its agenda by the opening remarks of National AIDS Programme Manager and the speech of Deputy Minister for Health.
Speaking at this event, the Deputy Minister for Health emphasized on Iran’s commitment toward 90-90-90, Prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) and the new super-fast track approach.
Speaking at the ceremony, the UN Resident Coordinator, Mr. Gary Lewis delivered the United Nations Secretary-General, Mr. Ban Ki-Moon’s message for World AIDS Day. Mr. Lewis then elaborated further on the bold targets of 90-90-90 and the way forward to achieve them in Iran.
UNAIDS Country Director, Dr. Fardad Doroudi delivered the message of Mr. Michel Sidibé, UNAIDS Executive Director.
In Mr. Sidibe’s message, it was stated that “A life-cycle approach to HIV that finds solutions for everyone at every stage of life can address the complexities of HIV. Risks and challenges change as people go through life, highlighting the need to adapt HIV prevention and treatment strategies from birth to old age. The success we have achieved so far give us hope for the future, but as we look ahead we must remember not to be complacent. AIDS is not over, but it can be.”
The Deputy Minister of the Ministry of labor, cooperative and welfare, Director General of Center for Disease Control of Ministry of Health, Director of Health Department from Prisons Organization, Director General of the Welfare Organization and WHO ,UNICEF Representatives were among other speakers in this event.
