04/10/2017 - UN envoy urges adherence to Iran nuclear deal

Zurich, Oct 4, IRNA – The Uniteedd Nations resident coordinator in Iran on Tuesday advised all the parties to Iran nuclear deal to take a wise stance and remain committed to the landmark deal.

'The IAEA has reviewed the status of compliance and has opined that Iran is in compliance with the JCPOA,' Gary Lewis told the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) referring to the eight reports that the International Atomic Energy Agency has published on Iran's commitment to its obligations under the nuclear agreement known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany signed the agreement in 2015, upon which Iran accepted to curb its nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions lift.

'This agreement was entered into – in good faith, in mid 2015 – by the P5+1 and Iran. The UN Secretary-General has also himself welcomed the sustained commitment by all JCPOA participants to the long-term viability and success of the agreement,' Lewis added.

'I would therefore consider – and certainly hope – that wise counsels will see the importance of adhering to the agreement,' he said in an implicit reference to the US President's rhetoric against the historic deal.

Despite repeated confirmations by the UN nuclear watchdog and the signatories to the deal, Donald Trump has frequently warned that he would cancel the deal or renegotiate it.
