Bees, butterflies and other pollinators affect all of us. The food that we eat, such as fruits and vegetables, directly relies on pollinators. A world without pollinators would equal a world without food diversity – no blueberries, coffee, chocolate, cucumbers and so much more.

They not only help ensure the abundance of fruits, nuts, and seeds, but also their variety and quality, which is crucial for human nutrition. Beyond food, pollinators also contribute directly to medicines, biofuels, fibers like cotton and linen, and construction materials.  

The vast majority of flowering plant species only produce seeds if animal pollinators move pollen from the anthers to the stigmas of their flowers. Without this service, many interconnected species and processes functioning within the ecosystem would collapse.

Pollination is therefore a keystone process, in both human managed and natural terrestrial ecosystems. It is critical for food production and human livelihoods and directly links wild ecosystems with agricultural production systems.

A need for a diversity of pollinators

Most of the 25,000 to 30,000 species of bees (Hymenoptera: Apidae) are effective pollinators, and together with moths, flies, wasps, beetles, and butterflies, they make up the majority of pollinating species. But the diversity of pollinators and pollination systems is striking.

Indeed, there are also vertebrate pollinators, including bats, non-flying mammals (such as several species of monkey, rodents, lemur, tree squirrels, olingo, and kinkajou) and birds (hummingbirds, sunbirds, honeycreepers and some parrot species).

Current understanding of the pollination process shows that, while specific relationships exist between plants and their pollinators, healthy pollination services are best ensured by an abundance and diversity of pollinators.

Adapting to changing climates

A diverse assemblage of pollinators, with different traits and responses to ambient conditions, is also one of the best ways to minimize risks due to climate change.  Their diversity ensures that there are effective pollinators not just for current conditions, but for future conditions as well. As a result of biodiversity, resilience can therefore be built in agroecosystems.

However, pollinators face main challenges today, from intensive agriculture, pesticides, to climate change. 

A pollination crisis 

Recognizing the dimensions of the pollination crisis and its links to biodiversity and human livelihoods, the Convention on Biological Diversity has made the conservation and sustainable use of pollinators a priority. In 2000, the International Pollinator Initiative (IPI) was established (COP decision V/5, section II) at the Fifth Conference of Parties (COP V) as a cross-cutting initiative to promote coordinated action worldwide to:

  • Monitor pollinator decline, its causes and its impact on pollination services;
  • Address the lack of taxonomic information on pollinators;
  • Assess the economic value of pollination and the economic impact of the decline of pollination services; and
  • Promote the conservation and the restoration and sustainable use of pollinator diversity in agriculture and related ecosystems.

Caring for bees and other pollinators is part of the fight against world hunger 

In agroecosystems, pollinators are essential for orchard, horticultural and forage production, as well as the production of seed for many root and fiber crops. Pollinators such as bees, birds, and bats affect 35 percent of the world's crop production, increasing outputs of 87 of the leading food crops worldwide, plus many plant-derived medicines. 

Why this date?

20 May coincides with the birthday of Anton Janša, who in the 18th century pioneered modern beekeeping techniques in his native Slovenia and praised the bees for their ability to work so hard, while needing so little attention.


13 May 2019 - Climate Action Summit

Joint Appeal from the UN System to the Secretary-General’s Climate Action Summit

1. We, the leaders of the United Nations system organizations*, appeal to Member States to step up ambition and take concrete action to limit global temperature increases to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels and adapt to the effects of climate change, as they strive to fulfil their obligations on human rights, including the right to health, the right to food security, the right to development, the rights of indigenous peoples, local communities, migrants, children, persons with disabilities and people in vulnerable situations, as well as gender equality, empowerment of women, intergenerational equity, and decent work and a just transition for all, as stated in the Paris Agreement.  As set out by the IPCC’s Special Report on Global Warming, limiting global warming to 1.5°C is necessary to prevent irreversible changes.  Achieving this goal will require changes on an unprecedented scale at all levels, but it is still possible if we act now.  With great urgency we call upon Member States to come to New York in September with concrete, realistic plans to enhance their nationally determined contributions by 2020 and in support to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. 

I. Mitigation 

2. We call upon Member States to take urgent action to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, recognizing that climate change mitigation is a moral, ethical and economic imperative.
3. The United Nations system supports Member States to make and fulfill their commitments under the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including through the nationally determined contributions and long-term low greenhouse gas emission development strategies, strengthening synergies, avoiding trade-offs and ensuring policy coherence in the implementation of the sustainable development agenda. 

4. Whilst acknowledging the progress and decisions adopted by individual UN organizations we are committed to strengthening our support by mobilizing scaled-up climate finance, facilitating technology transfer and capacity building, to enable Member States to raise ambition in their nationally determined contributions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45 per cent by 2030 and reaching the goal of zero net emissions in 2050; and to achieve sustainable development co-benefits that will make a difference in the lives of all peoples. 

II Adaptation

5. We call upon Member States to ensure that appropriate adaptation measures are taken to protect people, livelihoods and ecosystems, particularly people in those regions most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change including those at risk through forced displacement and migration.  We urge Member States to identify and build adaptive capacities and solutions in vulnerable communities and ecosystems and devote the maximum available resources and support to the progressive realization of the economic, social and cultural rights of all persons to ensure that no one is left behind. 
6. The United Nations system supports Member States to pursue inclusive, risk-informed sustainable development and strengthen actions to monitor, prevent and manage climate and disaster risks, including through the promotion of the national adaptation plans and the development of coherent national disaster risk reduction strategies.
7. We are committed to strengthening our responsiveness to Member States’ needs to reduce the adverse impacts of climate change, including on the stability of regions, states, cities and communities, build resilience, scale up efforts to provide safe, clean, accessible and affordable drinking water and sanitation for all, address loss and damage caused by climate induced disasters and enhance responsiveness of social protection systems to climate-related events.  We stand ready to support countries especially small island developing states and least developed countries to implement concrete actions to strengthen adaptation and resilience and we encourage Member States to come and showcase these actions at the Summit.

III. Finance

8. Climate finance is critical to deliver action on the necessary scale to address climate change.  In the context of the enhanced mobilization of financial resources, developed countries must deliver on the goal of mobilizing governments and the private sector to achieve the goal of USD100 billion per year by 2020 to support climate action in developing countries and further enhance their efforts on scaling-up financial resources.
9. We emphasize that States should maximize the positive impact of climate finance by ensuring that climate finance is used to maximize transformational change to reduce emissions and build systemic climate resilience; is accessible and benefits the most likely to be affected, including women, youth and children; guards against potential negative impacts of climate finance through establishment and implementation of effective environmental, social and human rights safeguards; and guarantees access to effective remedy in the event of harm.
10. We call upon Member States to build enabling policy frameworks to facilitate access to public and private finance and to implement and scale-up public policies to redirect finance flows towards low-emission and climate resilient development.
11. We are committed to strengthening this system-wide effort to create an enabling environment for investment, mainstream climate action across relevant national financial planning and integrate market-based instruments to sustainably crowd in and scale up responsible private sector investment.  We encourage Member States to share their national climate finance roadmaps, viable approaches and success stories. 

IV. Innovation 
12. We call upon Member States to pursue ambitious climate actions with opportunities for innovations in advancing sustainable development.
13. The United Nations system supports the enhancement of capacity of Member States to develop and utilize relevant data and technological innovations to find solutions for climate and sustainable development challenges and disaster risk reduction and management, including the use of new and emerging technologies, including information and communication technologies, data and tools. The Fourth Industrial Revolution offers tremendous potential for a paradigm shift to low-emission climate-resilient development pathways. 

14. Innovation, however, does not only entail technology, but also foresight approaches, new business models and financial instruments as well as innovative cooperation and partnerships, including enhanced regional cooperation, which are essential for ensuring a rapid and effective mid to long-term transition to a high-resilience low-emission development pathway. 

15. We are committed to strengthening this support and to building innovative partnerships with all relevant stakeholders, including academia, scientific community, NGOs, children and youth, women’s groups and entrepreneurs, trade unions, the private sector and local governments, to leverage concerted actions in areas of climate change mitigation/adaptation/finance/technology. We encourage Member States to share their innovative approaches to combat climate change with other countries at the Summit. 
V. The United Nations System

16. The United Nations system is committed to raising its own ambition to take concrete steps to combat climate change and to integrate more systematically sustainable development considerations into how we operate. Building on current efforts, we will develop a United Nations system-wide environmental and social sustainability strategy 2020-2030, to ensure the United Nations system practices the principles that it promotes and systematically embodies the Sustainable Development Goals, addressing the full picture of environmental and social sustainability in its policies, strategies, programmes, projects, facilities and operations. 

17. In particular, we commit to reduce our environmental impacts via targeted actions on GHG emissions, waste management, air and water pollution and biodiversity degradation. In the area of GHG emissions, in particular, we intend to align with the recommendations of the IPCC report, and we will take concrete steps in energy demand reductions in all facilities and operations, transition to renewables, and improvements in our travel and transport management and climate neutrality. 

18. We will adopt environmental management approaches based on the principles of continuous improvements and on the integration of sustainable development considerations on all our internal management functions to ensure that opportunities for improvements are captured wherever possible including via the application of environmental and social safeguards in projects and programmes.  Building on the Greening the Blue initiative, we will upscale and improve our sustainability reporting framework to communicate transparently about our progress, our efforts and challenges on the journey. 

19. At the Secretary General’s Climate Action Summit in September, we will present our system-wide efforts towards reaching climate neutrality in our internal operations by 2020 and enhancing environmental and social sustainability in all UN activities.



12 May 2019 - UNESCO International Water Conference

Leveraging the trans-sectoral management of water resources for sustainable water security and peace

Looking from space, satellite imagery shows the abundant masses of water that characterize the Earth. Yet, less than 1% account for usable fresh water.

Almost all human activities depend on water, be it food production, energy generation, industry or even recreation. Water management and governance affect the health of humans and ecosystems, and reflect the conditions of gender equality, education and cultural diversity of a region. Water resources are critical to sustainable development and poverty reduction.

Once more, UNESCO brings together its actors and partners to share innovative solutions to contemporary challenges. Thanks to its experience and expertise in the fields of Education, Sciences (both natural, and social and human sciences), Culture and Communication, UNESCO contributes through holistic, sustainable approaches to resolve issues impacting the governance and management of water.

Objectives of the conference

  • Bringing everyone around the table to discuss trans-sectoral approaches to the governance and management of water resources.
  • Launching a Call for Action to foster, embrace, and adopt trans-sectoral water management.
  • Sharing good practices enabling participation, transparency and information-sharing.
  • Evidencing of the importance of interdisciplinarity and the integration of sciences to support Member States in reaching the goals of the water-related international agendas.



8 April 2019- UN response to support Government-led efforts to help people affected by floods in Iran

  • We all, at the UN, are deeply saddened by the loss of life, injuries and damage caused by the severe floods in Iran. On behalf of the UN family and on behalf of the Secretary General, let me again extend my sincere condolences to the families of the victims, to the Government, and to the people of Iran. 
  • We want to recognize the government’s search and rescue efforts. However, loss and damage of critical infrastructure (homes, roads, railways, etc.) is significant. 
  • We note that floods are continuing, and the Government rescue and relief operations are ongoing. 
  • The UN and international community are strongly committed to supporting the Government and the people of Iran at this critical time. We had and continue to have excellent and close cooperation with the government particularly the ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Interior.

  • We have had and continue to have excellent close coordination and cooperation with the government and international community on our response to this emergency. 
  • So far, the UN has made available, over and above our existing and general resources, 1,420,000 USD for the ongoing immediate flood response with emergency medical supplies, water, sanitation, hygiene, health and shelter. 
  • After immediate life-saving assistance, the UN and international community continue to support government-led efforts for mid-term and long-term strategies to mitigate natural disasters and therefore more funding is needed for immediate, medium and long-term actions. 
  • In spite of the challenges caused by the prevailing political climate, the UN has been able to deliver appropriate and timely support, particularly for the procurement and delivery of necessary items to the country. We continue to work with all concerned parties to effectively address humanitarian needs.

  • It is also important that you know that it is not just the UN in Iran but all over, our Headquarters, whether in New York, or Geneva or Vienna are very committed to ensuring that the UN’s work continues unhindered. 
  • While in New York working with colleagues in the UN HQ on support to the UN in Iran, I closely followed the ongoing crisis in Iran on social media. I was touched by the stories of people’s dignity, strength of human spirit, resilience, and support for one another; communities have been united by this tragedy.  Children donating their Nowruz gifts for flood victims. 
  • In the area of Health, UN supports the efforts of the Ministry of Health, and is providing technical assistance with essential health services and emergency medical supplies. 
  • Regarding Emergency Shelter, the UN supports the efforts of IRCS, the Housing Foundation and the Ministry of Interior (MoI) and is providing technical assistance for the establishment and management of temporary shelters and emergency shelter supplies. 
  • With regards to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, the UN supports the Ministry of Industry and MoH on plans to provide drinking water and washing facilities for household needs and hygiene purposes.

  • For Education, the UN supports the Ministry of Education (MoE) and is in the process of providing technical assistance and supplies for temporary learning spaces as based on consultations on the ground. 
  • Concerning Support for Protection, the UN supports the Ministry of Cooperatives, Labour and Social Welfare (MCLSW), MoH and IRCS and their psycho-social support teams. 
  • To support Early Recovery, the UN works with National Disaster Management Organization (NDMO) and relevant line Ministries’ efforts to address the needs of the most affected people and communities. We know that women, children, people with disabilities, and the elderly are usually the most vulnerable within the affected population and therefore deserve special attention. 
  • We further wish to recognize that Iran has been, for nearly four decades, a generous and welcoming host for close to a million refugees and many other from abroad. In line with this tradition, it is heartwarming to see how the needs of these groups have been responded to in an equitable manner.    
  • In coordination with national and local authorities, the UN will undertake field visits to the affected areas to demonstrate our solidarity but more importantly to understand what the most critical needs are, and how best our assistance can support those affected by the floods. 
  • We look forward to continuing our effective cooperation and will assist the authorities with the recovery efforts. 
  • The UN is here to make a difference. It’s an honor for me to be here and we are at your service. 





فروردین 98- پاسخ سازمان ملل متحد به تلاش های حمایتی دولت برای کمک به مردم سیل زده در ایران

تهران 19 فروردین 1398 (مرکز اطلاعات سازمان ملل متحد)-- خانم اوگوچی دنیلز، هماهنگ کننده مقیم ملل متحد در جمهوری اسلامی ایران در نشست خبری که در محل وزارت کشورامروز برگزار شد فعالیت های سازمان ملل متحد درحمایت دولت جمهور اسلامی ایران برای کمک به مردم سیل زده را برای خبرنگار تشریح کرد.

متن کامل بیانیه ایشان به شرح زیر است:

همه ما در سازمان ملل متحد به دلیل کشته، مجروح شدن و خسارت های وارده  سیل های شدید در ایران عمیقا متاسفیم. اجازه دهید از جانب خانواده ملل متحد  و دبیر کل سازمان ملل متحد بار دیگر مراتب تسلیت صمیمانه خود را به خانواده های قربانیان، دولت و مردم ایران تقدیم نمایم.

مایلم تلاش های دولت در زمینه امداد و نجات را تحسین کنم. در عین حال خسارت به زیر ساخت ها (خانه ها، جاده ها، خطوط آهن و غیره) قابل توجه است.

می دانیم سیل ها همچنان ادامه  وعملیات امداد و نجات دولت نیز تداوم دارد.

سازمان ملل متحد و جامعه بین المللی قویا متعهد به حمایت از دولت و مردم ایران در این برهه حساس هستند.  ما همکاری عالی با دولت داشته و به این همکاری ادامه خواهیم داد به ویژه با وزارت امور خارجه و وزارت کشور. 

ما هماهنگی عالی و تنگاتنگ  در پاسخ به این وضعیت اضطراری با دولت و جامعه بین المللی داشته و داریم .

تا کنون سازمان ملل متحد یک میلیون و 420 هزار دلار کمک علاوه بر منابع موجود و عمومی برای مساعدت فوری مستمر به منظور تهیه اقلام پزشکی و بهداشتی، آب، تاسیسات بهداشتی، سلامت و سرپناه را بسیج کرده است.

سازمان ملل متحد و جامعه جهانی، پس ازارائه کمک های نجات دهنده فوری از تلاش های دولت برای استراتژی های میان و بلند مدت جهت کاهش بلایای طبیعی حمایت می کنند، بنابراین مبالغی بیشتر برای اقدام فوری، میان مدت و بلند مدت شامل کاهش خطر، مورد نیاز است. با وجود چالش های ایجاد شده به وسیله جو سیاسی فعلی، سازمان ملل متحد قادر بوده به ویژه برای تدارک و ارائه اقلام مورد نیاز به کشور، حمایت به موقع و مناسب ارائه دهد. ما به همکاری خود با طرف های مربوطه ادامه می دهیم تا نیازهای انسانی مرتفع گردند. مهم است که بدانید تنها نظام ملل متحد در ایران نیست که در این رابطه تلاش می کند بلکه مقرهای ما درنیویورک، ژنو و وین  بسیار متعهد هستند که فعالیت های سازمان ملل بدون هیچ وقفه ای ادامه یابد.

هنگامی که اینجانب درمقر سازمان ملل متحد در نیویورک بودم ، از نزدیک بحران ایران را در رسانه های اجتماعی دنبال می کردم. تحت تاثیر اخبار مربوط به کرامت، روح قوی انسانی، تاب آوری و حمایت مردم ایران از یکدیگر قرار گرفتم: جوامع به خاطر این فاجعه متحد شدند. کودکان هدایا و عیدی های سال نو خود را برای کمک به سیل زدگان اهدا می کردند.

در زمینه بهداشت و سلامت، سازمان ملل متحد از تلاش های وزارت بهداشت، درمان  و آموزش پزشکی حمایت می نماید و کمک های فنی با خدمات سلامت و اقلام پزشکی اضطراری ارائه می دهد.

سازمان ملل متحد در زمینه سرپناه اضطراری، از تلاش های سازمان هلال احمر ایران، بنیاد مسکن و وزارت کشور حمایت کرده و کمک های فنی برای ایجاد و مدیریت سرپناه های  موقت همچنین امکانات سرپناه اضطراری ارائه می دهد.

در زمینه آب، تاسیسات بهداشتی وبهداشت، سازمان ملل متحد از وزارت بهداشت، درمان و آموزش پزشکی و برنامه های این وزارتخانه برای ارائه کمک های فنی به منظور تهیه آب آشامیدنی و امکانات شست وشوبرای رفع نیاز منزل  و مقاصد بهداشتی حمایت می کند.  

در زمینه آموزش، سازمان ملل متحد از وزارت آموزش و پرورش در فرایند ارائه کمک های فنی و امکانات برای فضا های موقتی یادگیری بر اساس مشورت در محل حمایت می نماید.

درزمینه "حمایت از مراقبت ها"، سازمان ملل متحد از وزارت تعاون، کار و تامین اجتماعی، وزارت بهداشت، درمان  و آموزش پزشکی و هلال احمر در زمینه تیم های حامی روانی-اجتماعی حمایت می نماید. 

سازمان ملل متحد در زمینه "بهبود اولیه"، ازسازمان مدیریت بحران و تلاش های  وزارتخانه های مرتبط برای رفع نیازهای مردم و جوامعی که بیشترین صدمات را از سیل دیده اند، همکاری می نماید. می دانیم زنان، کودکان، افراد دارای معلولیت و سالمندان معمولا آسیب پذیرترین ها دربین جوامع تحت تاثیر بوده،  بنابراین نیازمند توجه ویژه هستند.

علاوه  بر این مایلیم این نکته را بار دیگر به رسمیت بشناسیم که ایران نزدیک به چهار دهه میزبانی سخاوتمند برای نزدیک به یک میلیون پناهنده از سایر کشورها بوده است. در راستای این سنت موجب دلگرمی است بنگریم چگونه نیازهای این گروه ها به گونه ای برابر پاسخ داده شود.

سازمان ملل متحد با هماهنگی مسئولان ملی و محلی، بازدید میدانی از نواحی تحت تاثیر سیل به منظور ابراز همبستگی خود اما از آن مهم تر درک اینکه بیشترین نیازهای ضروری کدام است، و کدام استان ها به کمک های سازمان ملل متحد نیاز دارند، همچنین مذاکره با مسئولان درمورد اینکه چگونگی ارائه  کمک ها به بهترین شکل به نواحی تحت تاثیر سفر می کنند. 

ما مشتاقانه  به همکاری موثر خود ادامه می دهیم وتلاش های  مسئولان در بهبود اوضاع  کمک می نماییم.

سازمان ملل متحد در اینجا حضور دارد تا تفاوتی ایجاد کند. برای اینجانب موجب افتخار است که اینجا درخدمت شما هستیم.

. برای بیش از 300 میلیون نفر در سراسر جهان، نوروز آغازی جدید است: فرا رسیدن سالی جدید؛ اولین روز بهار؛ تجدید حیات طبیعت

این فرصتی برای همه ماست که تعهدمان را به صلح، حقوق بشر و کرامت انسانی، برای تقویت گفتمان و احترام متقابل، محافظت از سیاره مان و ایجاد آینده ای که در آن هیچ کس نادیده انگاشته نشود، بار دیگر تاکید نماییم.

روز بین المللی نوروز با روحیه دوستی، آشتی و هماهنگی جشن گرفته می شود. من برای همه افرادی که این مناسبت را گرامی می دارند، بهترین آرزوها را دارم. با امید به اینکه تعطیلات نوروز برای همه ما الهام بخش باشد.
